Central Government Update: From Orientation to Advent

On November 30, 2024, the Orientation Session for Major Superiors concluded in Rome. This session brought together 15 major superiors, including provincials, vicars, and delegation superiors, alongside members of the Central Government.

Advent, a joyful time of preparation

The program offered opportunities for rich exchanges and fostered strong connections among participants and with the General Administration. The evaluations affirmed its success, emphasizing the importance of sharing experiences and receiving the necessary tools for serving the Congregation. As the session ended, we entered the season of Advent, a joyful time of preparing to celebrate the Birth of Christ. This shifted the focus of the Central Government. Almost all members of the General Council departed Rome for various missions. The Superior General, accompanied by a few council members, began visits to Oblate units in Zimbabwe, Botswana, and Ghana.

Mission visits across the Oblate World

Visiting Oblates in their places of ministry is a key responsibility of the Central Government. These visits allow for listening, affirming their work, and encouraging a deeper commitment to serve God, the church, and the poor. Other council members have traveled to Colombia, Venezuela, Bangladesh, and Cameroon for similar purposes. Some members are participating in meetings, including the General Finance Committee and a regional bursars’ gathering in Poland. Others remain in Rome to ensure the General Council’s presence during Ordinary Sessions. These sessions address important matters such as confirmations of final vows, appointments of Formators, and financial decisions, requiring at least three members in attendance.

Rest and Jubilee Celebrations

December is also a time for some members of the Central Government to take their annual holiday. After a demanding year of meetings, consultations, and events, this period provides needed rest and time with family. Fr. Kapena Shimbome, General Councillor for the Africa-Madagascar Region, will celebrate his 25th jubilee of priestly ordination during his time with his family in northern Namibia.

We pray for fruitful visits and meaningful participation in all scheduled events. To those on holiday, we wish a restful time to recharge for the work ahead. May Advent bring renewal and joy to all as we prepare for the coming of Christ.
