On behalf of the Survivor-led Steering Committee overseeing the Residential School National Monument initiative, I am writing to extend a heartfelt invitation to you to attend the site selection ceremony for the Monument. This historical event will take place on June 20th, 2023, from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. EDT at the West Block Terrace on Parliament Hill.

The Monument will stand as a powerful symbol of remembrance of the children who were lost and honouring the strength and resilience of Survivors who endured unimaginable hardships during their time in residential schools. It will serve as a testament to the collective commitment of our nation to acknowledge the painful legacy of these schools and to foster healing and reconciliation among all Canadians. Finally, it will also be the first Monument to be built on Parliament Hill with the guidance and full consent of Anishinabe Algonquin Nation and Survivors on their unceded territory.

The site selection ceremony will be a solemn and dignified event, featuring a ceremonial and cultural program. It will be an opportunity to come together as a community, to reflect upon this sad chapter of our history, and to pledge our commitment to creating a more inclusive and compassionate society for all Canadians.

We kindly request that you confirm your attendance by June 13th at carmen.roy@umanitoba.ca. Additional information will be provided a few days before the event. If there are any specific requirements or accommodations needed for your attendance, please do not hesitate to let us know, and we will make every effort to fulfill them.

Thank you for considering our invitation. We eagerly anticipate your response and sincerely hope to welcome you to this significant event.

Yours sincerely,

Stephanie Scott
Executive Director, National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation and
Member of the Survivor-led Steering Committee for the Residential Schools National Monument
