Memorial Mass
Bro. Collins Masinde, OMI
Members of the Kenya Mission were deeply honoured to participate in a poignant memorial ceremony for Bro. Collins Masinde, OMI, at Our Lady Queen of Peace Parish, Lumakanda, in the Diocese of Kakamega.
The people warmly welcomed our presence, expressing deep gratitude, while Fr. Douglas, the parish priest, did an outstanding job facilitating the luncheon and celebration. He also preached briefly and graciously guided us throughout the Mass, which was led by Fr. Fidele.
Eleven Oblates arrived at Our Lady Queen of Peace Parish at 8:00 am:
- Fr. Fidele Munkiele, OMI
- Fr. Greg Oszust, OMI
- Fr. Gerard Conlan, OMI
- Fr. Faustin Bungulu, OMI
- Bro. Joseph Magambo, OMI
- Bro. Zachary Mwenda, OMI
- Fr. Joseph Kyuli, OMI
- Deacon Charles Okeyo, OMI
- Deacon Stephen Wekesa, OMI
- Deacon David Ojiambo, OMI
- Brian Masungu
The group arrived at Larmudiac Parish on Tuesday afternoon and stayed overnight. By 4 am Wed. morning, we were on the road to Eldoret in two cars.
After having breakfast at the parish with Fr. Douglas, we proceeded to the family village and home, where Mass began at 10:00 am. The service, including speeches, concluded by 12:30 pm, followed by a well-prepared lunch. The Mission had made a significant contribution in advance, but it was Fr. Douglas who truly ensured that everything was beautifully arranged.
After the homily, Fr. Douglas led us up the makeshift center aisle to a table displaying a picture of Collins, encircled by soil. Each of us lit a candle and placed it on the soil in honor and remembrance of Collins, whose body was never found. The Mass continued with vibrant singing and a touch of dancing. Although most of the congregation were non-Catholics, the joined in wholeheartedly.
At the conclusion, Collins’ father delivered a speech that was both serious and humorous, sharing reflections on his trip to South Africa. Vincent, Collins’ younger brother, offered a heartfelt tribute. Fr. Faustin, as Director of Formation, gave a brief address, followed by Fr. Fidele, who introduced each Oblate. The community was deeply moved by the presence of so many of us.
After presenting a private gift to Fr. Douglas and the family, we departed shortly after 1:30 pm.
We then traveled back to Nakuru, leaving the Larmudiac Community behind while the rest of us continued to Karen, arriving by 9:30 pm – a little weary but grateful for a safe journey.
A heartfelt thanks to everyone who attended and to those who supported us with their prayers. May Collins rest in peace. Amen
