Mission in the North

Northern Canada  is a place of extraordinary beauty, rich culture and strong communities and life there comes with realities that are unique to the Arctic. There are vast distances, isolation between communities which results in very high living costs. Life in the North is shaped by its vast distances, long winters, extreme weather and months of limited daylight. These realities can make travel, work and everyday life challenging. Northern communities are also facing social concerns such as substance use, violence, crime, suicide and the rising cost of living.

The Oblate mission has long been working side by side with northern communities of Canada. By living alongside the people, the Oblates have learned from the traditions, knowledge and ways of life that are deeply connected to the land.
