Thoughts on the Draft Restructuring Plan and the Inter-Chapter meeting
The 37th General Chapter mandated the Superior General to “draft a restructuring plan for the entire Congregation” and present it at the upcoming Inter-Chapter meeting. The Chapter clearly stated that this plan must be prepared “through a synodal process.” With just two months to go, where do we stand? What can we expect at the Inter-Chapter and beyond?
Chapter Mandate
After more than two and a half years of reflection, dialogue, and discernment, the Superior General and his Council have finalized the draft restructuring plan. This plan will be presented at the Inter-Chapter meeting in August. It reflects the history of the Congregation, insights from its members, proposals from the ad hoc committee, and the shared wisdom of the Central Government.
Before the meeting in India, the plan will be shared with all delegates (Provincials and Delegation Superiors) and with the wider Congregation. This allows delegates to arrive informed and prepared, having already reviewed the content. Members who are not delegates are encouraged to participate by offering feedback to their respective delegates ahead of time.
A Synodal Process
As directed by the Chapter, the meeting will follow a synodal process, focused on spiritual conversation and discernment. This is not simply about voting on proposals. It requires listening deeply to one another and to the Holy Spirit.
After the Inter-Chapter meeting, a document will be prepared, indicating areas of consensus and where further discernment will be needed. This document will be made available to the entire Congregation. Where consensus is reached and no changes to the Constitutions and Rules are needed, implementation will begin. Topics lacking consensus will remain open for further dialogue.
What Comes Next
At the 2028 General Chapter, additional restructuring proposals will be brought forward, particularly those requiring constitutional changes. The post-Chapter period will focus on implementing the changes approved by the Congregation and confirmed by the Holy See.
This is an important time in the life of the Congregation, which calls us to pray for wisdom, courage, and discernment. We must journey together as pilgrims of hope in communion. Let us not lose sight of the purpose: conversion, renewal in community life, and commitment to mission!
